EXCERPTS FROM A RANGER'S DIARY: (from an InterPlay game overview) HIGHPOOL: Bobby....We found this kid cowering in the corner. He wouldn't tell us anything until Stew put his face two inches from the boy's and asked all these questions about the cave and about Jackie and about the dog. Here the kid lost it (maybe out of fear, maybe because Stew's breath was so bad.) He started babbling about how his dog Rex was sick and how he told Jackie not to go down into the cave. The Cave....It wasn't easy to find at first, but we finally did, thanks to my great perception. We used our climb skill to get over the piles of rocks and encountered Rex, Bobby's sick dog (Rex was rabid, if you want to know the plain truth). Rather than let the dog go on in it's sick, frothy misery, I did the humane thing and sent it to the big kennel in the sky with a single bullet. We found Jackie crouching behind the rocks in the very back of the cave and escorted her out. DARWIN VILLAGE: We had heard from some of the townsfolk in Needles that the southern entrance was laced with radioactive waste. If we had radiation suits, we could've taken the more direct southern route, but we didn't so we had to leg it north and enter through the mountains. Mad Dog Fargo & Metal Maniac....We found these two guys sicker than dogs. They had somehow been poisoned and all that would save them was an antitoxin. Eugene ran over to the lab next door to see what he could whip up. With the chemicals that we found in a locker in the bunkhouse at Ugly's Hideout in Quartz and with a couple pieces of fruit, Eugene made two doses of antitoxin which he administered to the men. In minutes, their fevers broke and within hours, the men were nearly back to full health and offering their services to us. Black Market....Looking through his list of coveted passwords, Eugene gave the two guards CRETIAN. The two guards stepped aside and let us get close to the counter. Here were the best weapons we'd seen yet. Although the prices were fairly stiff, Kate picked up a nice assortment of explosives. One thing about the desert: "Anything goes". It's just one big lawless sandbox. Do anything you want, but just don't get yourself killed. That tends to shorten your lifespan incredibly. Good luck and may your Uzi never jam. ( *** WAIT - THERE'S MORE *** ) ================================================================================ ================================================================================ USING MEDIC / DOCTOR SKILLS TO "HEAL" THE WOUNDED: You start the game with 2 Rangers with "MEDIC" skills: Snake Vargas level "2" Angela Deth level "1" As your players are "wounded" in combat, use the "MEDIC" skills to save their lives ! The condition of those seriously wounded will quickly progress to more severe stages and finally to DEAD over time UNLESS they are given "medical" attention! A level 2 MEDIC, can usually HEAL those critically wounded, but it may take several tries. Use your MEDIC skills to heal the seriously wounded and the experience you gain will eventually raise skill levels to "12" maximum, by the end of the game ! ============================ VERY IMPORTANT TIPS - THE GAME'S "AUTOSAVE" FEATURE - Whenever you enter a "new" location, the game is automtically saved at the point where you entered the location. Thus, if all members of your band are "killed", the "game" will "end" and you can then "restart" at the point where you entered the location ! (Early in the game, this may be better than trying to "escape" and "heal" the wounded with "low-level" (1 or 2) Medic Skills.) ALWAYS "SAVE" THE GAME IMMEDIATELY AFTER YOU EXIT ANY STORE ! There is a "flaw" with the game program, if you DON'T "save" the game and anything happens (ie: everyone gets "killed" OR you decide to "QUIT" and NOT "SAVE" present position) the game will re-start with the last "autosaved" position, but this will be INSIDE the Store and when you exit the store it will "die"/ "close permanently". Since only three stores sell weapons and ammunition, it would be BAD to lose one of them ! Only the Black Market in Darwin Village offers automatic weapons, medium grade armor, rockets, and plastic explosives, but these are very expensive. Darwin is NOT a place to "explore" without adequate armor and weapons ! *************************** XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX *************************** Here's a rough map of the desert: (game area) ================================= ________________________________________________________________________________ RR RR *B.C.* XXXXXX L.V. ( ** B.C. & S.B. will appear later in the game) ________________________________________________________________________________ *************************** *************************** *************************** The game begins in Ranger Center, near the S.E. corner of the desert. At this point your rangers are real "wimps" lacking good weapons, but they do possess many of the essential skills needed in the game. The experience/point values double when advisaries are killed in hand-to-hand combat rather than with guns or rockets ! Use Axes, Crowbars or Clubs for Brawling experience. Use Knives for Knife Fight experience. *************************** XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX *************************** The "Wasteland" game in a quick summary : ---------------------------------------- 1) Visit Highpool and read the messages on the wall by the "store counter". The messages tell you to rescue "Jackie" from the "cave", to "fix the broken water pump", and direct you to the "Desert Nomads". At the "Nomads" you could "buy" an "engine" if you had more cash, then the "brakeman" directs you to Quartz to continue your adventure. You may find "Agricultural Center" and the "Guardian's Citadel" in your search for the "Nomads". At the "Citadel" you're "warned to stay away." Help the farmers at "Agricultural Center" kill the "varmints", sell the fruit for cash to buy an "engine", get some better loot when you've helped save the farmers' crops. 2) In Quartz, get the "password" you need for the "Nomads", gather up better "low-grade" armor, rescue 4 "hostages", get ammo and supplies. "Ace" can operate the jeep north of Quartz ! 3) Jeep ride to garage in Needles where jeep breaks down. In Needles, checkout situation, rescue 2 "hostages" & recruit 1 civilian, find and return the "Bloodstaff" for loot. By this time, Rangers should have "medium-grade" armor, A/R's & SMG's. Recruits should have spare armor & weapons suitable to their abilities. The loot from the Bishop/Bloodstaff includes an Engine to "repair" the jeep ! 4) If "Ace" is still in your group, have jeep "repaired" for a quick ride to Las Vegas. Here your jeep is "stolen" by "thieves", sorry about the rip-off, but you wanted to play the game right ! At least you're starting in the right place. Acquire any needed skills in the library and get info/tips from the "old begger" in a near-by building! Places of "interest" are a casino, 2 "outlaw hideouts", the golf course, the racetrack, the jail, and a small building with insects, gang members, and loot (a PROTON AX). There's just ONE "hostage" to rescue and ONE "civilian" to recruit. Finally the MOST IMPORTANT PLACE - the "TEMPLE" ! The sewers below the Temple are the "key element" of the game itself - find all the "parts" to assemble "Max" (an android) for further instructions AND the last 2 "locations" appear on the Desert Map ! At this point the armor should be 5 Kevlar Suits, Rad Suits for the other members of your group ! 5) At Sleeper Base (first of the NEW locations), find 4 "SECPASS" keys, repair the broken equipment, acquiring "pilot skills" for one of your Rangers is probably a good idea - this is the place to do it, "clone" your 4 best Rangers/or recruits, acquire some better Weapons, rest for a while, and disband the weaker recruits and replace with the "clones" ! For those "clones" you released, CLONE THOSE RANGERS AGAIN FOR FUTURE USE IF NECESSARY - who knows who still might get "killed" ? One of these "Secpass" keys will open the doors at the "secret base" (Project Darwin) in Darwin Village ! 6) Go to Darwin Village - approaching from the north, through the mountains - explore the village to find two "sick" hostages, mix up "antitoxins" in Lab to heal them ! Finally, find the entrance to Project Darwin ! IF you go to the lower level, kill the robots and huge animals to get 1 Pseudo-chitin Armor, 2 Laser Carbines, 6 Power Packs, and 1 Fusion Cell. (This is the best armor yet.) "Accidently" release the prisoners on the lower level and use the elevator to go to the upper level ! On the upper level, kill Finster (he'll ONLY wait for you when the prisoners have been released), take his "head" to the "mindlink" machine and solve the " MINDMAZE". IF you succeed, you should find a "Secpass B" key here, BUT I haven't been able to complete this part of the game ! * Go back to Sleeper Base, use "Secpass B" to open door to main vault, get through wall to acquire more Pseudo-chitin Armor, Weapons, and Ammo ! NOW YOU'RE READY TO ATTACK THE GUARDIAN'S CITADEL ! 7) At the Guardian's Citadel, acquire 5 Power Armor & 4 "keys" to Base Cochise. * There's also another "Secpass B" key hidden here ! Rescue the "hostage" and return him to Savage Village OR take a "gift" for the "Junk Master" to receive directions to Base Cochise, like maybe you couldn't find it anyway. 8) Naturally the toughest is last. The ROBOTS defending this place are really BRUTAL ! You'll need a FULL band of troops because the robots inflict a lot of damage ! If you gained "PILOT SKILL" at Sleeper Base, you CAN use the Helicopter in the Guardian's Citadel - any trip, OTHER THAN TO BASE COCHISE is a waste! The Helicopter will "take-out" the robots defending the outside of the Base (but more will appear) ! You won't gain any "experience points" for the robots killed when the helicopter is used. If you're brave and confident, COCHISE can be conquered mostly with your PROTON AXES/CHAINSAWS ! Laser Rifles OR BETTER help against more distant Robots during the initial assaults outside and inside. Find those places inside where you can "HEAL" the "wounded" AND "REST" in safety (around the "training area" rooms) ! Find and use BOTH entrances to the base - one is the roof, through the weapons pod cover, the other is the Main Gate. The Main Gate will be your escape route when your mission is "accomplished" ! Once inside, find the Armory for 2 more Power Armor, Weapons, and Ammo. Find the last "RECRUIT", but be careful NOT to get another Hostile Robot ! The RECRUIT's got extra Armor you can "sell" later, PLUS a good Weapon and plenty of ammo ! ** The real "trick" for success MAY involve TWO parts ! * The FIRST involves activating a time delay for the "SELF-DESTRUCT MECHANISM" ! * The SECOND involves activating the "SELF DESTRUCT MECHANISM" itself AND GETTING BACK TO THE DESERT BEFORE THE BASE "BLOWS" ! (The "delay mechanism" gives you some "extra" time to escape from the base - if you DON'T use the "escape pod" OR if you get involved with "robots" on your way out !) Either way, exit the base as one group, the real "secret" to success! *************************** If you succeed, watch "Cochise" self-destruct, "Radio" for final information, Congratulations and Promotions. You'll earn 10 points (not the usual 2) and you're left standing in the Desert with nothing to do ! (END OF GAME) --------------------------- If you fail, watch "Cochise" self-destruct - killing you in the process ! I WARNED YOU - THE "TIME DELAY" MAY HELP ! Now there's just "empty desert" outside the Base Cochise remains ! (END OF GAME) --------------------------- (END OF GAME) Not really, just reload (copy) the original "GAME1" and "GAME2" files to the Directory where you have your WASTELAND game and you can start all over again from "scratch". Having been through it before, it should be easier, and you may want to take some "short-cuts" ! *************************** ***************************
