I got to the Cubby Bear right on time around 7:30 which ended up being way too early so we ended up sitting around and drinking and just hanging out. Dan got there first of course. He seems to always be the first person to the venues. Thats cool tho. I can respect that. I just like to tease him about it. Better early than late.
I put my guitars and crate up near the stage and watched the band setting shit up who ended up being Broken Finger. Then I went to the bar to order up some beers. They did a long ass sound check and then when we heard them actually start a full song so we went into the big stage room to check em out. They played two 4 minute plus songs and then stopped. I guess that was their 'real soundcheck' but it seemed a lil much to me. So then we had to wait around till like 9:30 for them to really start their set. So we went and hung out in this lil dungeon area they have set up for the bands. We took some pictures and we just hung out and talked and whatever. I stickered it up down there a bit. On the toilet, there was a Johnny Vomit sticker and a Chainsaw Johnny sticker so I added a Low Profile one right near those. Pretty cool. And there were free beers done there too. Much better than paying $4.50 a bottle. I don't get it. They charge $4.50 a bottle but $10.00 for a bucket of 5 beers. But the downfall to that is that u can't bring the buckets of beer down into the stage area for whatever reason and they don't have that same deal at the bars in the main stage room. Go figure. They must make a killing off of people buying single beers or shots. That just keeps us broke ass punk rockers from drinking a whole lot and forced us to drink all the free beer in the basement band area.
Broken Finger start their set right around 9:30. They were a 4 piece rock band. The singer/lead guitarist was real tatted up but sang real good, had a good voice and all. The bassist played with no pick so I can luv that. They were real good and rocked for sure.
We were up next. Our set was:
Knee Deep in Shit's Creek
Another Chance
Ignore Me
She Luvs Me Cuz I Rock
Payback
Home Sweet Home (originally by Motley Crue)
Hypercritical
Louder
Wasted Time
Sheila
Simple Song
Every Rose Has Its Thorn (originally by Poison)
I'll admit that I totally fucked up on Every Rose. I forgot a whole part of music and didn't know what to do. So if u want an excuse, I could say that I only played it twice. I should have jammed along to it at least once but I didn't so I suck and they fired me for it. My first band firing!!!! Alright. I could feel the luv.
We rocked for sure besides that. I played cordless and used Madigan's amp so thanks to him!!!! It was a high energy set. We were all running and jumping around on stage and Brey even jumped off stage and played down on the floor. I was watching his cord cuz I thought he'd unplug himself which I have done at many shows before I got my cordless system. He needs to get one of those. If you're going to run around all over and jump on and off stage, u really need a cordless system. It makes things so much easier.
I got props from the bassist and drummer from Broken Finger. The drummer dude said that the first song of the set, Knee Deep, reminded him of Pegboy or something so thats pretty cool. I'll take it as a compliment even tho I had nothing to do with writing that song. It was still cool to hear. I'm glad they dug the set.
The Wanderers were up next. They played real raucous rock music. The singer frontman told jokes and was genuinely amusing. He came by and shook our hands and thanked us for sticking around and watching their set.
Drawing a Blank were up last. They also played at the Wise Fools Pub show with Shooting Blanks on another fill in show I did with them. I didn't stay their whole set but the songs I saw rocked. They r very high energy punk rock. They get wild and run and jump around. Their singer is awesome. Very cool voice and good stage presence. Check em out sometime.
I had a lot of fun and am glad I got to do the set with Shooting Blanks. Thanks to Lisa. Thanks to Jonny and Betty Burbank for showing up. Thanks to Shawna for setting up the show. She actually saw Low Profile when we played a crazy show at Blondies in Chicago so she recognized me from that and we shot the shit about it for a lil while. The show was a success to me. I should have some pics soon so check back. Cya
